What We're About
In short strokes, Strummerfest is a series of music festivals and concerts with three aims:
1. To remember Joe Strummer (1952-2002).
We seek to honour the memory of the late, great, "Punk Rock Warlord," Joe Strummer, former front man for punk's seminal spokesmen, The Clash; but don’t expect our performers to be tribute bands or only play covers. That's not what we're about. Like we said, we seek to honour him, so we ask our performers to be as original as he was. This goes along with point #2.
2. To support local, independent musicians and music venues.
The arts and music culture of a city is its hallmark, an indication of its sophistication and vibrancy. We hope to help the Waterloo Region and other places continue to thrive in this regard by providing opportunities to showcase rising talent in the context of generating good will by supporting charitable objectives. In our first year, more than 20 independent bands and individual performers graced Strummerfest’s seven different downtown Kitchener stages. In total so far (as of Summer, 2016), there have been over 70 individual performances at Strummerfest events., all of which were by independent artists in a variety of styles..
3. To support suicide-prevention charities.
Per the most recent statistics, suicide is Canada’s 9th most common killer. Unlike most major diseases, it is preventable. For many people, it just takes an infusion of hope. We try to help with that. We primarily support Your Life Counts and the Waterloo Region Suicide Prevention Council. The value of the work performed by these organizations, and the hope and support they provide to struggling individuals and families, cannot be overstated. We are very pleased to be able to contribute all net proceeds to these organizations. Strummerfest is entirely non-profit, particularly with respect to its organizers who are all volunteers, and most bands perform at discounted rates or for no fee at all.
